Benefits of Massage Therapy for Runners

When we run we are doing the same motion over and over again. This movement requires sustained, repetitive muscle contractions for each step. These sustained, repetitive muscle contractions can translate to shortened, tight muscles, joint range of motion losses, and decreased circulation to compressed tissues. In addition to the repetitive muscle contractions we are producing a great amount of force with each step. The greater the force, the more muscle fibers are required to shorten. The force generated by each step travels from the foot all the way up the leg and into the trunk. With the repetitive nature and high forces that come with running, even minor restrictions in the muscles and joints can greatly increase the chances of pain and injury. Restrictions in one area will cause problems up and down the entire kinetic chain causing the body to move in an unwanted, inefficient way to compensate for the problematic area. Over time these repetitive forces will accumulate in the body and cause even minor movement problems to be greatly magnified.

Sports massage is a great way to keep running, stay healthy, and even improve your performance. Maintenance massages are a great way to identify and treat restricted areas before injuries occur. Post race or hard workout massages can help flush out metabolic waste products and promote oxygen and nutrients to the muscles enhancing the body's natural healing process. The circulatory system that is responsible for oxygen transfer, nutrient delivery, and waste removal at the cellular level. These processes are improved with massage which will directly or indirectly impact the entire body helping you recover and perform better. Some other benefits of massage for runners include:

  • Improve connective tissue healing
  • Reduce muscle soreness and fatigue
  • Reduce cortisol levels
  • Increase range of motion
  • Restore posture and gait
  • Improve sleep quality
  • Decrease blood pressure

If you are looking to become a better, more efficient runner while reducing the risk of injury, sports massage is a great addition to your training regimen. Although, it is important to know that the effects of massage are cumulative. The effects will increase with sequential, repetitive massages. Set a regular schedule for your massages depending on your goals and your training load.
